Swimming: Ukraine Take Four, China Clinch Seventh Golds

China collected their seventh swimming title at the 22nd World University Games on Saturday when Ukraine erupted to make a gold haul of four.

China collected their seventh swimming title at the 22nd World University Games on Saturday when Ukraine erupted to make a gold haul of four.

On the last day of the swimming competition, triple world champion Luo Xuejuan of China triumphed in her specialized event of the women's 100m breaststroke in a game-record time of one minute 7.45 seconds.

"She should have been faster if not for fatigue," said Luo's coach Zhang Yadong.

Luo also swam in three other events and took titles in the 50m breaststroke as well as 4x100m medley relay. She finished second to teammate Qi Hui in the 200m breaststroke.

"But on the whole, she did her best in the Universiade," said Zhang.

Double world champion Yana Klochkova spearheaded the Ukrainian gold haul of the night as she charged to her fourth title here by claiming the women's 200m butterfly in 2:09.52.

The 21-year-old secured a double in the medleys by winning the 400IM and 800 IM, repeating her performance from last month's world championships in Barcelona.

She also had a 200m freestyle title to her gold collection on Thursday.

Her fellow Ukrainian Olga Mukomol picked up the victory in the women's 50m freestyle in 25.57 while Vyachesl Shyrshov added another gold to the country's medal collection by clinching the men 's 50m freestyle in 22.59.

The relay team rounded up the "Night of Ukraine" by setting a new Universiade record of 3:37.46 in the men's 4x100m medley relayin their victory.

Russian winter champion Yuri Prilukov took his third Universiade gold here as he won the men's 1,500m freestyle crown in 15:12.13. He also triumphed in the 400m and 800m.

James Gibson of Britain clocked a game record in 27.92 while Japanese Nakamura Reiko won the women's 200m backstroke in 2:12.17.
