The Philippine rebel group New People's Army (NPA) ransacked an isolated military camp in the southern Philippines and escaped with 15 firearms, a regional military commander said Friday.

At least 50 NPA fighters swooped on the military base in the outskirts of a town in Bukidnon province on Thursday as the pro-government militiamen were eating breakfast, the ABS-CBN on-line news quoted Lieutenant General Roy Kyamko, Southern Command chief,as saying.

The rebels took the weapons and two field radios and fled without any resistance from the militiamen, Kyamko said. There were no casualties in the incident.

Troops have been dispatched to pursue the guerrillas.

The Philippine government has said it was preparing to resume talks with the rebels' political arm the National Democratic Frontin Norway, two years after negotiations were suspended when NPA rebels assassinated two lawmakers.

The 10,000-strong NPA, listed as a terrorist group by the United States and the European Union as well as the Philippine government, has been waging insurgency since 1969 in the remote areas in the country.
