One construction worker was confirmed dead and 13 others injured following the collapse of an overpass under construction in north China's Tianjin City Tuesday afternoon, local officials said Wednesday.

Eyewitness said that scaffolding supporting the main body of the overpass suddenly collapsed, followed by the structure itself.

They said many construction workers were taken to hospitals by their colleagues.

Most of those injured workers are in critical condition, said Doctor Xiao of Tianjin Municipal No. 3 Central Hospital, where 10 injured construction workers are being treated.

He said that one construction worker had failed to respond to emergency treatment, and had died later Tuesday afternoon, while others suffered from fractures or ruptured spleens or intestines.

The accident is still under investigation.
