Exotic destructive plants like crofton weed and siam weed continue to spread in China's provinces and autonomous regions as Yunnan, Guangdong and Guangxi, damaging a total of 150 million mu (1 mu=0.165 acre) forests, as is known lately from the State Forestry Administration.

During the first half of this year 126.7337 million mu of forests were plagued by pests, a rise of 9.02 percent over previous year, according to a report released by the Administration on August 21. The general situation of pest-affected areas is relatively stable, with large-area plagues reduced the regional damages are worsened. Statistics indicate 105.6473 million mu forests were affected by injurious insects, up 6.99 percent; 6.3467 million mu by illness, down 26.60 percent; 14.7395 million mu by rats and rabbits, up 66.5 percent. Among these, 16.8629 million mu were affected by pine moth, down 11.27 percent, showing a trend of stably drop in most southern areas.

In newly planted areas of Shannxi, Ningxia, Qinghai, Guizhou and other provinces and autonomous regions, the rat/rabbit affected areas rose apparently, with 30 percent trees damaged; in southeast and southern areas as many as 6.0642 million mu pine forests were eaten by pests, a rise of 105.52 percent; in secondary forests in northeast China, tent caterpillar flared up again and destroyed 24.3014 million mu forests.

To deal with the spreading trend of exotic pests, the State Forestry Administration has demanded local forestry departments to strengthen supervision and control measures.
