Macao Considers Building More Hotels
The Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government will consider accelerating administrative examination and approval of applications for hotel construction to respond to a growing market demand, said a senior SAR government official Friday.
The Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government will consider accelerating administrative examination and approval of applications for hotel construction to respond to a growing market demand, said a senior SAR government official Friday.
Ao Man Long, secretary for transportation and public works, disclosed that Macao needs to build more hotel rooms in order to accommodate a large tourist inflow brought by a facilitated individual travel (FIT) policy, which has been piloted by seven cities in south China's Guangdong Province since the end of July.
Despite the rosy market prospect, the SAR government will take consideration of a long-term urban planning and tourist development potential in handing down its approvals on hotel building, said Ao.
Tourist industry insiders estimated that as the FIT policy will be applied in Beijing and Shanghai as of Sept. 1, Macao will need some 10,000 more hotel rooms to meet the demand.
Macao currently has some 9,000-hotel rooms. The average hotel room occupancy rate in Macao is estimated to soar up to 85 percent in August, compared with 76.4 percent in the corresponding period of last year.
