West Japan Railway Co. (JR West) will open an office in Shanghai in September to invite Chinese tourists to western Japan, railway officials said Wednesday.

The opening of the office has been delayed by four months due to the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in China and other parts of the world, the officials said.

JR West's office in Shanghai will cooperate with offices in China of Japanese local governments to plan sightseeing tours to Japan, as well as inspection tours for Chinese companies.

JR West hopes to begin dealing with travel-related matters by next February, they said.
