UN Agency in China Mourns Death of UN Envoy for Iraq
The United Nations System in China and all its staff are shocked and saddened by the death of Sergio Vieira de Mello and several other officials in the bomb attack on the UN headquarters in Baghdad Tuesday, according to a press release Wednesday from the United Nations Development Program office in China.

Sergio Vieira de Mello, the top UN envoy in Iraq, paid an official visit to China in April 2000 in his capacity as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in East Timor.
"We join the UN Secretary-General in our grief and condolences for beloved colleagues and a hero who has given his life for the cause of peace and humanity. Our thoughts and prayers are with thevictims of this tragedy and their families," the press release quoted Khalid Malik, United Nations Resident Coordinator and UN Development Program Resident Representative, as saying.
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in a statement described Vieirade Mello's death as "a bitter blow for the United Nations and for me personally," according to the press release.
