This year has witnessed a satisfactory result in the road construction in Tibet and the three main projects (including the key, leading-to-county and cross-country road construction) are going on steadily. Out from the yearly planned investment of RMB 3.5 billion, 2.4 billion-yuan has already been finalized with an investment of 1.16 billion yuan completed.

Since the beginning of the Tenth Five-year Plan, the Government has given more support to the traffic construction in Tibet year after year, and the investment has increased several times. The road construction in Tibet has witnessed an all-round acceleration. First of all, the speed for the construction of key roads has been raised. While putting an end to round-off work for the six projects started in the Ninth Five-year Plan (such as the road renovation project from Yangbajing to Lhasa along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway), Tibet has now brought to finish the six improvement and rebuilding projects. They are the Gamma Valley and Rumei Valley projects (the second phase); besides, the 10 key projects, such as the reconstruction of Tuoba-Changdu Road and the road from Lhasa to Gongga Airport (including the construction of two bridges and a tunnel), which will be started soon.

The construction of the asphalt roads leading to counties also goes on well. Nine projects of suchlike has been planned up to July, and RMB 1.7555 billion yuan has been invested. At present, seven projects have been started with the investment added up to 1.03661 billion yuan. Three projects of asphalt through-county roads have basically been finished, and over 80 percent of another three projects have been fulfilled. The two projects started in March for getting through to counties have been completed with an investment of 59.79 million yuan, and are to be fulfilled within this year.

The road construction in the rural areas will soon enter into a high tide. Up to July 2001, Tibet had invested about 1.6 billion-yuan (including the labor value of farmers and herdsmen) to the construction of nearly 6,000-km-long new roads in rural areas, and the traffic troubles in administrative villages and 250 natural villages have been solved. Since the beginning of the year, we've seen the launching of 67 projects with 13 of them brought to an end. Another 9 items projected are about to start of which the preparatory or checkup work of the four is now over. That means an investment of RMB 361.67 million yuan so far and 474-kilometer-long newly built roads have been wound up.
