The China Agricultural University set up a research center Monday, which will enroll China's first 20 postgraduates majoring in wine production and management, university sources said.
The center, located in Changli of north China's Hebei Province,is sponsored by China's largest wine producer, the China National Cereals, Oil & Foodstuffs Import & Export Group.
With the university's theoretical advantages and the rich experience of the group, the center will be able to provide the students many facilities for learning both wine production technology and management, and will off a Ph.D. program in the future.
"We hope the center will become a national base of senior wine technicians and managers," said Qu Zhe, general manager of wine department of the group.
China has become one of the world's largest wine producers and consumers. In 2002, the country's total wine production reached 300,000 tons with an annual growth of about 15 percent. But China is lacking some of the technologies of developed countries.
