A group of 330 South Korean civic activists left for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea Thursday to participate in this year's anniversary celebration of Korea Peninsula's liberation from Japanese colonial rule in 1945.

The delegation will begin the four-day celebrations later in the day by touring a place in Pyongyang and watch a cultural performance. The joint celebrations also include sports events, pro-unification seminars and tours to historic sites, reported South Korean national news agency Yonhap News.

The two sides planned to adopt a joint statement Friday calling for peace and unification of the divided countries, said Yonhap.

The Aug. 15 Korean Liberation Day is a major holiday both in South Korea and the DPRK. Both sides usually mark the day with pro-unification proposals and celebrations.

Last year's celebrations were held in Seoul. This is the third time for the two countries to held joint commemoration since the inter-Korean summit in 2000.
