The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested a British national suspected of involvement in plot to smuggle shoulder-fired missiles into the United States, CNN reported Tuesday.

The man was arrested in Newark, New Jersey, as part of a joint operation by the FBI, and the British and Russian authorities, the report said. More arrests were expected.

The unnamed suspect was charged of seeking to smuggle a Russian-made surface-to-air missile into the United States. There was conflicting information as to whether he had successfully smuggled the weapon into the country.

The Bush administration has recently dispatched teams of aviation safety investigators to Iraq and to major capital cities in Europe and Asia to determine if their commercial airports can be defended against shoulder-fired missiles.

The inspections were part of the administration's response to recent intelligence reports suggesting that a terrorist attack using small heat-seeking missiles may be imminent, probably overseas, the New York Times reported last week.

Concerns about terrorists using shoulder-fired missiles to shoot down passenger planes increased in November after an unsuccessful al-Qaida attack on a chartered Israeli jet in Mombasa,Kenya.
