The Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gannan in northwest China's Gansu Province on Tuesday held a celebration marking its 50th anniversary.
The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress andthe State Council have sent a message congratulating the prefecture.
People of different ethnic groups gathered at Hezuo City,capital of the prefecture, celebrating with singing and dancing performances.
The Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gannan was founded in southwestern Gansu in October, 1953. It now governs seven counties and one city. About 660,000 people of 24 ethnic groups are livingin the prefecture with Tibetans the major group.
The prefecture has made remarkable progress in economicdevelopment since it was founded. Last year, its gross domestic product (GDP) reached 1.67 billion yuan (about 204,000 US dollars)and per capita income reached 1,266 yuan, an increase of 900 percent and 6200 percent since 1953 respectively.
