Five women from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) crossing the Thai-Lao border illegally were intercepted on Thursday by the Thai police, local press reported on Friday.

The five women were arrested in Thailand's northern border district Chiang Saen after they crossed the Mekong river on the Thai-Lao border.

They told police through interpreter that they left the DPRK seven years ago and made their way through China and Laos to Thailand, trying to seek political asylum in South Korea when theyarrived in Bangkok.

They had worked and saved hard for fees paid to the traffickersto bring them to Thailand, a local police investigator told Bangkok Post.

Declining to reveal the exact money paid to the traffickers, the five people told police that each of them had paid some 2,000 baht (about 47.62 US dollars) for the 5-minute boat ride on Mekongfrom Laos to Thailand.

They were expected to be fined 2,000 baht each and waited for their fate to be decided on the local court.

They told police to expected a larger influx of people from theDPRK through Laos.

Ten DPRK people last Thursday slipped into the Japanese embassyin Thailand, seeking political asylum.

The Thai police said they had driven out every month some 10-15people from the DPRK with faked passports since the beginning of this year.
