Chechen Rebels Shoot Down Russian Helicopter, Killing Three

Chechen rebels shot down a Mi-8 Russian federal helicopter from a mobile rocket launcher Thursday night, killing three crew members on board, a spokesman for the headquarters of the combined forces said Thursday.

The helicopter "was hit by a rocket fired from the ground,killing three crew members," the spokesman was quoted by Interfaxas saying.

The disaster took place at 8:30 p.m. Moscow time near the village of Dyshne-Vedeno in the southeast part of the break away republic of Chechnya when the helicopter was performing an operation to land troops in mountainous wood terrain.
