Bush Dodges Question on Powell's Plan to Serve a 2nd Bush Term
US President George W. Bush and Secretary of State Colin Powell dodged questions Wednesday about whether the latter would stay on if Bush wins a second presidential election.
US President George W. Bush and Secretary of State Colin Powell dodged questions Wednesday about whether the latter would stay on if Bush wins a second presidential election.
"Well, first things first, we hope there is a second Bush administration," Bush told reporters in Crawford, Texas.
"I don't have a term," said Powell, "I serve at the pleasure ofthe president."
On a press report earlier this week that he and his deputy, Richard Armitage, had planned to step down in early 2005, Powell said, "This is all August speculation with no basis in fact. There was no basis for this story to begin with."
Powell and Armitage flew to Texas on Tuesday for dinner with Bush and talks on foreign-policy issues Wednesday.
The talks were on a range of international issues, including the Middle East and the Korean peninsula, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.
