Macao Fire Brigade announced Tuesday that it has excluded the possibility that a premeditated arson was linked to the big fire explosion on Aug. 1, and the fire was caused by the leakage of incendive liquid illegally stored near anoil gas transfer station.

Ma Io Weng, commander of the Macao Fire Brigade, said that there were some 600 cylinders containing 12,000 litres of chemicals with ingredients of alcohol, acetylene and leather cleansing agents illegally piled in a privately owned land asset. The fire was ignited by the liquid leakage exposed to the summer heat of over 30 degrees Celsius.

He said that the deposit condition in the yard failed to complywith that for storing dangerous chemicals. Concerned departments will seek the responsibility of the owner.

The fire, occurred in Iiha Verde District to the north of the Macao Special Administrative Region, caused a chain explosion of the chemical containers. Although the fire was put out without heavy losses, it was the largest fire disaster in Macao in the past 10 years. Over 60 out of 300 fire fighters drafted to extinguish the fire suffered from burns after the fight.

A more terrifying fact about the accident was that the illegal storage was only 10 meters away from the warehouse that houses cylinders containing some 80 tons of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG),said Ma.
