Lenovo, China's leading IT company, has formed a research and development (R&D) system based on its local facilities in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, in a fresh move for business expansion.

Yang Yuanqing, president and CEO of Lenovo Group Ltd., said the R&D system will encompass development over the whole of China.

Lenovo's R&D center in Beijing, the headquarters for the company's technical innovation, has become one of China's most powerful research institutes after five years' development.

Lenovo also deploys a strong research force in Shanghai, where an increasing number of multinationals base their regional headquarters. Lenovo's Shanghai research and development arm, launched in 2001, focuses on mobile communication technology. Following the relocation of Lenovo's laptop PC business to Shanghai from Beijing in 2001, a research center, a test center and a group of laboratories have been set up for technology renovation to guarantee the quality of its notebook computers.

Shenzhen in south China is Lenovo's hard drive R&D base, where a design center launched two years ago runs eight advanced basic technology labs and several international patents, some of which serve as standards for the computer industry. With the support of the Shenzhen base, Lenovo has become one of the few Chinese hard drive manufacturers that own independent intellectual property rights.

Experts believe that the three R&D bases will vitalize Lenovo'stechnology innovation.

Lenovo, founded in 1984 and formerly known as Legend, reported sales totaling 21.4 billion yuan (2.5 billion US dollars) in 2001.
