Hyundai Asan Wishes Mount Geumgang Tour to be Continued

Hyundai Asan Corp. expressed its hope to continue Mount Geumgang tour and other inter-Korean economic exchanges sponsored by it despite the death of its head on Tuesday, according to South Korean Yonhap News.

Hyundai Asan Corp. expressed its hope to continue Mount Geumgang tour and other inter-Korean economic exchanges sponsored by it despite the death of its head on Tuesday, according to South Korean Yonhap News.

Chung Mong-hun, president of Hyundai Group and chairman of Hyundai Asan, committed suicide by jumping from his 12th floor office in Seoul early Monday morning.

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s Asia-Pacific Peace Committee sent condolence message to Hyundai Asan, in which it demanded temporary suspension of Mount Geumgang tour as a gesture of morning the death of Chung.

Moreover, the DPRK has decided not to send a delegation of condolence to the funeral of Chung Mong-hun, but it will instead hold its own memorial event, according to Hyundai Asan Corp.

"The DPRK will hold a large-scale memorial event for Chung Mong-hun at Mount Geumgang. They will express condolences at the altar set up by Hyundai at the mountain resort," said Hyundai Asan.

The DPRK also agreed to construct a monument and lay down articles left by Chung at Mount Geumgang. After the funeral, whichis reported to be held on Aug. 8, Chung's family members, relatives and journalists will visit Mount Geumgang via a cross-border overland route to emplace Chung's nails and hair there according to Chung's wishes.

Hyundai Asan has been devoted itself in inter-Korean economic and culture exchanges these years. It started operation of Mount Geumgang tour in 1998, and more than 500,000 people have visited the DPRK famous resort just located near inter-Korean border.
