Azerbaijan President Appoints His Son Prime Minister

Azerbaijan President Geidar Aliyev signed a document on Monday appointing his son, Ilkham Aliyev, prime minister of the country, following an earlier consent from the parliament, the Itar-Tass news agency in Moscow reported.

Azerbaijan President Geidar Aliyev signed a document on Monday appointing his son, Ilkham Aliyev, prime minister of the country, following an earlier consent from the parliament, the Itar-Tass news agency in Moscow reported.

The document was signed after 101 of 102 members of the 125-seat parliament attending a session held earlier Monday voted for Ilkham Aliyev's appointment.

Under the constitution of Azaibaijan, the president should appoint the prime minister after the legislature's approval, and the prime minister is the second highest-ranking official in the state after the president.

Ilkham Aliyev was born in Baku on December 24, 1961.

He graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in 1982 and finished post-graduate courses in 1985.

He also hold a degree of candidate of science (history), the Itar-Tass said.

In 1885-1990 Ilkham Aliyev worked in the Moscow State Instituteof International Relations.

In 1991-1994 he acted as director-general of the Orient Companyin Moscow. He was appointed in 1994 vice-president of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) and was promoted tofirst vice-president of SOCAR in 1996. He was also deputy in two parliaments.

In 1999, he was elected as the deputy chairman of Yeni, Azerbaijan's ruling party, and in 2001 as the party's first deputychairman.

The new prime minister, who is married with two daughters and ason, speaks Russian, English, French and Turkish.

After the appointment was signed, Ilkham Aliyev replaced in thepost Artur Rasi-zade, who had been serving as Azerbaijan prime minister since November 1996.

Also on Monday, Rasi-zade was named by the president as first vice prime minister.
