'American Wedding' Arrests North American Box Office

"American Wedding," the third film of the "American Pie" comedy series, garnered 34.3 million USdollars during its debut weekend, capturing the top spot in the North American box office, according to studio estimates released Sunday.

"American Wedding," the third film of the "American Pie" comedy series, garnered 34.3 million USdollars during its debut weekend, capturing the top spot in the North American box office, according to studio estimates released Sunday.

The film, starring Jason Biggs and Alyson Hannigan as sweethearts whose marriage festivities are ruined by the antics ofStifler, played by Seann William Scott, sent last weekend's box office champion "Spy Kids 3D: Game Over" to the second place with 20.1 million dollars for the three-day weekend.

In "Spy Kids 3D," the third episode of the Cortez family saga, the two Cortez kids travel inside a 3D video game to capture a world-destroying villain played by Sylvester Stallone.

The debut weekend ticket sales of "American Wedding" were 15 million dollars more than the 1999 original, but 11 million dollars less than 2001's "American Pie 2."

"Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," a swashbuckling adventure starring Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom, took in another 19.1 million dollars to finish the third.

The Oscar-bound "Seabiscuit," a horseracing drama which expanded its run by 434 theaters, advanced to the fourth place with 17.5 million dollars. The film debuted last week in the fifthplace with 21.5 million dollars.

"Bad Boys II," an action-heavy buddy cop comedy reuniting director Michael Bay and stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, rounded out the top fifth with 12.7 million dollars.

Hollywood power couple Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck's "Gigli," a comedy about a gangster who falls in love with a lesbian rivalduring a kidnapping, took in just 3.8 million dollars to finish atthe seventh place, tying with "Finding Nemo."

"Finding Nemo," the year's highest-grossing movie, has so far grossed a total of 320 million dollars.
