DPRK Holds Elections for Supreme People's Assembly

The election of the 11th Supreme People's Assembly, the legislative body of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) ended Sunday afternoon, but the result is expected to come out Monday.

The election of the 11th Supreme People's Assembly, the legislative body of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) ended Sunday afternoon, but the result is expected to come out Monday.

A report released by the Central Election Committee said all registered voters in this country participated in the voting started at 9 a.m. and ended at about 6 p.m.

Mobile ballot boxes were provided to the those who are not able to go to the polls due to illness or old age, the report said.

DPRK leader Kim Jong Il went to the 658 constituency and cast his vote, the Korean Central News Agency said.

The polling booth of Constituency 36 in Pyongyang is decorated national flags and posters with words "let's participate in the voting for deputies to the people's assembly and give our support to them!"

A musical performance was in full swing by a women band in the voting station. The lists of electors and candidates were pasted at the gate to the booth.

A total of over 1200 electors in this constituency turned up in lines for the checkup of identification before casting their votesat a closed cabin.

Paek Yong Nam, a voter in Constituency 36, told Xinhua that this year's election is more significant than the past years.

"Confronted with the blockade and containment of the United States, this election will consolidate the people's organs of power and display the single hearted unity of our people", he said.

Jo Yong Suk, a woman primary-school teacher, said she would cast vote in the affirmative for candidates in the constituency.

"They are the outstanding among the Workers' Party of Korea ", she said.

Also on Sunday, elections to the legislatures at provincial, city and county levels were also carried out across the country.

The Supreme People's Assembly is the top legislative body in the DPRK and has the mandate to elect members of the National Defense Commission, the presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly and the cabinet as well.

There is no exact figure available for the number of deputies to the 11th Supreme People's Assembly. The present legislature has 687 deputies.

The last Supreme People's Assembly election was carried out in July 1998, followed by the election of Jim Jong Il as the Chairman of the National Defense Commission.
