Hundreds of People Flee Fresh Fighting in Eastern Uganda

Hundreds of people on Saturday fledheavy fighting between the Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF) and Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels at Willa rocks outside Amuria town, in Katakwi district, eastern part of the country, reported Sunday Monitor newspaper to be published on Sunday.

Hundreds of people on Saturday fledheavy fighting between the Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF) and Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels at Willa rocks outside Amuria town, in Katakwi district, eastern part of the country, reported Sunday Monitor newspaper to be published on Sunday.

Willa rocks are 6 km north of Amuria town and is one of the areas where the LRA have camped since two week ago.

The rebels have also reentered Aojakitoi and Achomai forest reserves, about 4 km to the west of Amuria town.

There was deafening gunfire punctuated by bomb blasts as the UPDF and the local militia engaged the rebels at different fronts including Willa and ALere parishes in Kuju sub-county.

Columns of people from Amuria, 25 km north of Soroti town, wereseen trekking to Soroti for safety.

UPDF 3rd Division Commander Col. Andrew Gutti confirmed the fighting, but did not divulge details about the casualties.
