A suspect arrested in an anti-terror raid Friday in the Kenyan port city of Mombasa detonated an explosive device which killed a police officer and himself, the police said.
Mombasa police chief Jared Wanjama confirmed that the man was escorted in a van to a police station for questioning when he detonated the bomb concealed on his body.
Witnesses said the police's raid was targeting at five suspects occupying a house in Mombasa, but four of them managed to escape into the narrow streets of the city's Old Town.
At least one more police officer was seriously injured and was immediately admitted to a nearby hospital.
Last November, 14 Kenyans and three Israeli tourists were killed when a car bomb plowed into the Paradise Hotel in northern Mombasa.
Five people have been charged with murder in connection with the terrorist attack, which was blamed on Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network.
