Most areas in southern China will continue to swelter in hot weather for some 10 days with temperatures reaching 35 to 38 degrees Celsius, the Central Meteorological Station (CMS) forecast Friday.
Southwest China's Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality, central China's Hubei Province and most areas south to the Yangtze River, China's longest, are likely to report temperatures of between 39 and 41 degrees C., said Yao Xuexiang, deputy director of the station.
Over the past month, the lower reaches of the Yangtze River andsouth China have reported temperatures above 35 degrees C., one tothree degrees higher than those for the same period.
Yao attributed the continuing hot weather to the impact of subtropical high pressure.
In addition, the CMS forecast that from Friday to Saturday, heavy rainstorms will hit the valleys of the Songhua and Nenjiang rivers in northeast China, which will worsen the flood conditions in these areas.
Local governments have been urged to make full preparations forthe potential disasters to be caused by floods.
