The athletes of the Hong Kong SpecialOlympics team will take a 10-day quarantine training in Macao before setting out for the World Summer Games in Ireland.
Chui Sai On, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao, said on Sunday that Macao will provide training grounds for the 31-member team while they come to a quarantine in Macao from June 9.
Under an agreement between HK and Irish officials over this weekend, the HK team has been accepted to take part in the Games. The Irish government had formerly banned teams from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei from joining the event extending worries about the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) virus spreading.
In order to meet the quarantine requirements of the Irish side, the HK team is obliged to take quarantine in a SARS-free region before going to the Games.
Chui said that the Macao Sports Development Office and the Health Service will ensure the athletes to take adequate close-offtraining during the quarantine period, and their health conditionsto be closely measured.
Macao, which is only an hour of jetboat trip away from Hong Kong, has remained to be a "safety island" after the epidemic broke out in its neighboring regions of Hong Kong and Guangdong Province. It has only verified one SARS case, and the patient was discharged from hospital at the end of May.
Macao will also send a 38-member team to attend the track-and-field, swimming, badminton, table tennis and bowling contests of the Games this year.
