US Appoints Iraqi as CEO of Interim Team to Run Oil Ministry

US authorities on Saturday appointed an Iraqi as the CEO of a new top management team to run the Iraqi oil ministry, a US official said.

"We are pleased to announce that Thamir Ghadhban had agreed to accept the position of chief executive officer of the interim management team for the Iraqi oil sector," Tim Cross, a deputy to retired US general Jay Garner who is responsible for Iraqi reconstruction, said in a statement.

Ghadhban was the ministry's director of planning under the regime of ousted President Saddam Hussein.

"We are also pleased to announce the formation of an advisory board for the oil sector with Philip Carroll and Fadhel Othman in the position of chairman and vice-chairman," Cross said.

Carroll is a former president and CEO of Shell Oil and former CEO of engineering and construction company Fluor, according to the statement.

Othman, who left Iraq in the 1980s and has lived in Turkey, served formerly as the chairman of Iraq's State Oil Marketing Organization and in various positions in the Iraqi oil ministry.

The decision was made after "extensive consultations and on the advice of the executive committee of the oil advisory board," Crosssaid.
