Expansion Project of Highway Starts in Tibet

An expansion project of a highway linking Lhasa, the capital city of northwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, with Gonggar Airport started Saturday.

An expansion project of a highway linking Lhasa, the capital city of northwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, with Gonggar Airport started Saturday.

With a total investment of 650 million yuan (78.6 million US dollars), the project is expected to be completed at the end of 2005. After completion, the road journey between Lhasa and Gonggar Airport will be shortened by 34 kilometers.

The construction of the highway includes two new bridges, of 1,583 meters and 3,788 meters respectively, and a 2,437-meter tunnel, according to the local transport department.
