Top Chinese officials have marked the 10th anniversary of the historic Wang-Koo Talks on cross-Straits exchanges with calls for improved relations between the mainland and Taiwan.

State Councillor Tang Jiaxuan, Director of the Taiwan Affairs Office Chen Yunlin, and President of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) Wang Daohan said the one-China principle is very important for the development of cross-Straits ties.

The Wang-Koo Talks, held on April 27 in Singapore 10 years ago, was attended by ARATS President Wang Daohan and his Taiwan counterpart Koo Chen-fu, chairman of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF).

The meeting initiated cross-Straits negotiations on economic, scientific, technological and cultural exchanges.

However, the exchanges broke down due to the push by Taiwan leaders for Taiwan independence.

The Wang-Koo Talks showed that no matter how big the political differences, the two sides could negotiate and seek a consensus, as long as they adhered to the one-China principle, said Tang in his article.
