The "Wang-Koo talks'' in April 1993 achieved great success and created a valuable new environment for progress in the cross-Straits relationship, especially in the fields of trade and culture, said Beijing-based scholars.

The remarks were made on Friday at a symposium held by Taiwan Research Institute (TRI), marking the 10th anniversary of the "Wang-Koo talks.''

Institute Vice-Director Xu Shiquan urged the Taiwan authority to accept the one-China principle -- the consensus reached by Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS) and Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (TSEF) in Hong Kong in 1992 -- calling for a resumption of cross-Straits dialogue and negotiations.

Wang Daohan, chairman of ARATS and his Taiwanese counterpart Koo Chen-fu, chairman of TSEF held an historic meeting in Singapore in 1993, leading to a series of technical negotiations.

Xu said on Friday the "Wang-Koo talks'' in which the two organizations reached the common understanding that the both sides can solve the concrete questions through dialogue and negotiations, is of great importance, as it is the most practical way to break the political stalemate across the Straits.

Some of the political differences between the two sides should not block the developing of cross-Strait relations, said Professor Xu Bodong from Peking University. The differences can be set aside for a moment, as long as the two sides are ready to talk with sincerity about the principle of one China, he said.

Zhu Weidong, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said that the consensus reached in 1992 and the "Wang-Koo talks'' was a win-win deal for both sides.

Huang Jiashu, a professor at Renmin University of China, said the "Wang-Koo talks'' was a constructive achievement made by the two sides and provided a way to solve the Taiwan question based on the one-China principle through dialogue and negotiation.

Another professor from Peking University, Li Yihu said that developments in the past 10 years, showed that sticking to one-China principle would push forward the relationship between the two sides, which would otherwise become tense and move backwards.
