China's Ministry of Commerce issued a warning Friday to its citizens to be cautious about an agency's advertisement for laborers to work in a Florida-based farm in the United States.

Some media in China reported that the United States has opened its labor market to China, and an intermediary agency in southwestChina's Chongqing municipality claimed it could find Chinese people employment as farm laborers in the United States at the cost of 140,000 yuan each.

The ministry has contacted the Chinese embassy in the United States and the Chinese general consulate in Houston to check the report. A labor official in Florida doubted its reliability, saying the state authority has not yet received a new application from the state's farms for employing temporary farm workers from China.

The official said the state had only approved six Chinese to work as temporary farm workers in the first half of 2002, and that employment had expired.

The ministry said that, according to lawyers, it is in line with US law for local farms to employ temporary workers. But the practical procedure is very tough and it is unlikely the Chinese applicants could obtain the visa in such a stagnant US economy.
