Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien confirmed Sunday that US President George W. Bush would not be visiting Canada as planned.
Bush had been scheduled to visit Canada on May 5. However, Chretien said events, particularly the war in Iraq, simply overtook the agenda.
As late as Saturday, Chretien was saying he had received no word from the Americans about a postponement. Chretien said he hoped the visit would happen before he retired next February.
While the Iraq situation is given as an official reason, relations between Canada and the United States have become strained over the Canadian government's decision not to support the US-led war in Iraq without United Nations approval.
