China's economic center, Shanghai, started Friday the second phase of clean-up scheme of the Suzhou River which runs through the city.

The river, running a 23.8-km-long section traversing the urban area of Shanghai, would be clean, clear and scenic after the second phase is completed in three years, said Yang Xiong, Vice-Mayor of the city.

About four billion yuan (483.67 million US dollars) will be spent in cleaning the river water, building sewage processing plants on the upper reaches of the river and planting trees and grass on the bank.

Under the scheme, the city will first build a 102-meter-wide lock along the river with an investment of 200 million yuan (24.18 million US dollars) to replace the old one which is considered an eye-sore on the river area.

The first phase of the scheme, beginning five years ago, has managed to turn the polluted, stinking river into a relatively clean waterway.
