The past years saw "one country, two systems" being translated from a scientific concept into vivid reality, said Ji Peiding, commissioner of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

During a lunche on held Tuesday by the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, Ji said over the past years, "we have abided by the 'one country, two systems' principles, exploring our way forward along a path no one has ever taken before."

"We persist that everything we do should be conducive to safeguarding state sovereignty, and to promoting Hong Kong's prosperity and stability," he noted.

Regarding Sino-US relations, Ji said they are one of the most important bilateral relations in the world and there is much more that binds the two countries: both countries wish to maintain world peace and regional stability; both sides share important economic interests; both need to cooperate within the framework of the United Nations; the two countries need to expand their cooperation in the fields of disarmament and arms control, in the fight against terrorism and transnational organized crime, and in areas of energy development, environmental protection, scientific and technological cooperation, education and cultural exchanges, etc.

"I am sure you will all agree with me that if our two countries constantly expand our common interests, enhance mutual trust and adhere to the principles of the three China-US joint communiques, China-US relations will continue to develop," he said.
