Yahoo Launches New Search Engine

Yahoo Inc, a leading global Internet media company, launched a new search engine Monday, claiming it is a faster and easier way for users to find what they are searching for on the Internet.

Building on the back-end technological improvements in relevancy and comprehensiveness while leveraging the assets of Yahoo's network, the new search engine provides a better search experience in a cleaner, easier-to-use interface and faster ways to find relevant information, Yahoo said.

"Yahoo!'s goal is to provide the highest quality search experience on the Internet," said Dan Rosensweig, chief operating officer of Yahoo. The new search engine marks the next step in building an integrated search platform that leverages the most relevant, comprehensive content from across the Web, he said.

"In the last eight months we have conducted extensive research to understand what our users are looking for in a search experience and these latest improvements to Yahoo! Search are focused on providing the key features that our users want," said Jeff Weiner, Senior Vice President of Yahoo! Search and Marketplace.

Industrial experts here believe Yahoo's new search engine, which combines Google's index with Yahoo's customized services spanning sports, driving directions and weather reports, is aimed at replacing Google as the world's number one online search engine.

According to Search Engine Watch, an industry newsletter, Google handles an average of 112 million searches a day and Yahoo handles about 42 million.

At present, Yahoo uses on its portal a search engine it licensed from Google three years ago. To reduce its dependence on Google, Yahoo bought search engine specialist Inktomi for 279.5 million US dollars last month. Yahoo is expected to incorporate Inktomi's tools into its search engine by year's end.
