Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan met Tuesday with Palam Sundev, chief of the General Border Department and commander of Border Troops, and his party.

Cao, also vice-chairman of China's Central Military Commission and state councilor, said since the normalization of Sino-Mongolian relations, exchanges between the two sides in the political, economic and military fields have developed smoothly, adding that the two sides also cooperate closely in international and regional affairs.

The long-term, stable and healthy cooperative relationship of mutual trust forged by leaders of the two sides has evolved in a profound manner, he said.

Sharing a border of 4,600 kilometers, China and Mongolia have implemented border agreements and treaties and made contributions to friendly and cooperative relations, he stressed.

The strengthening of relations between the two countries and the two armed forces is in the fundamental interests of both sides and is also conducive to regional peace and stability, he said.

China is willing to strengthen exchanges and cooperation between the two armed forces, and in particular, between the armed forces stationed along the borders, on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence and guided by the principle of "regarding neighbors as good partners", he said.

Sundev said Mongolia and China are friendly neighbors with effective cooperation in the political, economic and military fields.

The development of friendly military relations, as an important component of bilateral relations, has contributed to stability along the border as well as to peace and development of the two countries, he said.

He expressed his hope to further exchanges and cooperation between the two armed forces in the new century.
