Chinese human rights experts and scholars Friday slashed a US annual human rights report, saying it was "subjective, irresponsible and not serious."

The Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2002, released by the US State Department on Apr. 1 (Beijing time), "gathering some unchecked and specious information and drawing a conclusion without scientific analysis, lacks the seriousness that a government document should have," said Chen Zhishang, a professor at Beijing University.

Chen was speaking at a symposium held by the China Society for Human Rights Study (CSHRS) to comment on the US human rights report.

The participants said the US government, in total disregard of China's progress in the field of human rights, attacked China's human rights situation out of ulterior motives, which were to serve its policy to put pressure on China in an attempt to change its social system, block its development and make it Westernized.

They said the United States should consider its own human rights problems rather than concentrating its attention on criticizing other countries in its annual human rights report.

According to the experts, the Untied States, with its poor human rights record, was completely unqualified to criticize or point a finger at China or any other country over their human rights status. Its comment on the human rights status of other countries indicated the unilateralism the United States was pursuing in this field.

The experts believed it was the aim of world hegemony that made the US nit-pick at other nations' human rights issues without the authorization of the international community and support of international law.

They noted that the ongoing Iraq war, which had caused serious humanitarian calamities in the country, was the most obvious demonstration that helped people see the United States in its true colors -- the United States is seeking hegemony under a mask of safeguarding human rights.

"If the US really cares the human rights of other countries and respects the sovereignty and dignity of other countries, it will stop the war on Iraq and return to the track of a political resolution," said Zhou Jue, head of the CSHRS.

The experts urged the US to abandon the position of using human rights issues to interfere in other countries' internal affairs.

They added that the human rights problems in one country should be addressed by its own government and people, and the common issues of human rights in the world should be resolved with the participation of the governments and people of all countries.
