Iran's southern ports of Khorramshahr and Abadan are ready to handle incoming and outgoing cargoes, mayor of Abadan city declared on Friday.

"Notwithstanding the continuing war in Iraq, the two ports are now ready to load and unload cargos as security measures have been put in place by the Islamic Republic's Guard Corps," Major Jamal Alami was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.

According to the official, activities in the ports had been halted in the past few weeks due to certain problems caused by the invasion of neighboring Iraq by British and US forces.

He also voiced optimism that domestic and foreign ships will resume patronage of the ports' services after the ports start operation.
