Four children drowned after a pick-up car plunged into the sea Thursday morning in Hainan Province, south China.
The four children and three adults in the vehicle belonged to two families surnamed Lin and Zheng and were all from Haikang County, in neighboring Guangdong Province.
One girl and three boys, aged from six to 12, died.
The accident happened at around 8:40 a.m. when they were waiting for a ferry boat at Haikou Port to return to their hometown.
The driver, named Lin, said that when he and a man named Zheng stepped out of the car to ask when the boat would depart, the car began to roll towards the sea, which was about five meters in front.
Lin, father of a six-year-old boy, was also knocked into the sea as he and Zheng tried to stop the car.
A witness said the vehicle had floated for about 10 minutes before sinking, taking the four children and Zheng's wife, who was later saved by Lin and her husband.
Police rushed to the scene and launched a rescue operation.
The four children were brought up at around 10:00 a.m. and were confirmed to be dead one hour later.
The pick-up car has been recovered and further investigations are underway.
