Public Hearing Held on University Explosions
The man who planted explosive devices at two universities and detonated them to become famous has admitted his guilt during an appearance in the Beijing No 1 Intermediate People's Court.
A public hearing on the explosions last month at Qinghua University and Beijing University was held Tuesday at the Beijing First Intermediate People's Court.
Huang Minxiang, 26, was accused of causing the two explosions at two dining halls of the universities on Feb. 25, which injured nine people and caused 220,000 yuan in damages (about 26,500 US dollars).
According to prosecutors, Huang brought black powder by train to Beijing on Feb. 21 and created the explosive devices at a hotelfor the explosions.
Huang fled after the explosions but was later caught by police. He confessed to the crime and apologized to those injured.
Public prosecutors said Huang's actions violated public security and caused harm to the public, as well as damaging property.
A victim in the explosion at Qinghua's Heyuan Dining Hall, Cheng Lie, Tuesday asked for a civil action to be brought against Huang.
He asked the court to order Huang to pay compensation of 22,000 yuan (US$2,660).
No reason was given in court for Huang's actions but previous media reports said he had wanted to "make himself famous.''
His judgment is expected to be handed down within the next two months.
