Marine freighter service between Shanghai and the Gulf region has remained uninterrupted despite changes in ports for moorage, a local customs source said on Tuesday.

An official with the Shanghai Customs said the impact of the Iraq war on foreign trade at Shanghai Port would be very much limited.

To check a possible negative impact caused by the war, ShanghaiCustoms has introduced an round-the-clock system to keep in touch with the relevant shipping agencies and airlines and to help them go through essential new procedures in case of a delay in cargo delivery or a change of means of transportation, said the official.

According to the official, ships destined for ports in Iraq or adjacent areas will now stop at ports in the United Arab Emirates,Iran and Saudi Arabia, where the cargo will further be shipped to the final destinations via other means. Up to now, because of the war, there has been only a delay in the delivery of a small amountof cargo exported by a lighting company to Kuwait.

Air service from Shanghai to the Gulf region is still available, but a growing number of exporters of minor merchandise have to stop exporting commodities because of the rising cost from sudden changes in air routes.

Western Asian countries in the Gulf region have been among the newly found markets for Shanghai. Last year, the trade volume between Shanghai and West Asia rose to 1.327 billion US dollars, or an increase of 21.4 percent over 2001.

Shanghai also exported 35.77 million US dollars worth of commodities to Iraq last year, which was just a half of the exports done in 2001, but Shanghai's imports from Iraq have been nil since 1998.
