Senior CPC Official Meets with German Guests

Wu Guanzheng, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met with Edmund Stoiber, minister-president of Germany's Bavaria and his entourage in Beijing Tuesday afternoon.

Wu Guanzheng, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met with Edmund Stoiber, minister-president of Germany's Bavaria and his entourage in Beijing Tuesday afternoon.

Wu, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, welcomed Stoiber and his party from the Bavarian government and economic circles.

The bilateral relationship between China and Germany has made noticeable progress since the two countries forged diplomatic tiesover 30 years ago, he said. Wu fully affirmed the friendly cooperation between Shandong province and Bavaria and thanked Stoiber for the great contributions he had made in this regard.

Noting that both China and Germany are influential countries intheir respective regions and in the world at large, Wu said the two countries have broad common interests in safeguarding the world peace and promoting common development. Further efforts to strengthen consultations and cooperation are conducive not only tothe common interests of the people of the two countries, but also to the peace and stability of the world, he added.

Wu also briefed the German guests on China's political and economic situation.

Stoiber admired and congratulated China's achievements made over the past 20-plus years since the country carried out its reform and opening to the outside world.

China has not only realized a fast, steady economic growth, butmaintained political stability, which is a very arduous task for acountry with a population of nearly 1.3 billion, he said.

The 16th CPC National Congress has mapped out a grand blueprintfor China's economic growth, and will provide enormous commercial opportunities for Germany, Stoiber said. Cooperation between the two countries will have a bright future in economic, scientific, technological and cultural fields.

Moreover, he expressed his conviction that China would play an increasingly important stabilizing role in international affairs.

Chinese state councilor meets with German guests
Chinese State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan met with Edmund Stoiber, minister-president of Germany's Bavaria, and his party in Beijing Tuesday.

Tang extended a welcome to the delegation from the Bavarian government and economic circles, saying that the bilateral relations between China and Germany have developed very well, witha frequent exchange of high-level official visits and remarkable cooperative results.

The Chinese government very much valued its relations with Germany, and was willing to further step up bilateral exchanges and cooperation in all areas, he said. And he hoped that Bavaria would continue exploring new cooperative areas and channels in China.

Tang conferred with the German guests on bilateral relations and major present international issues in an atmosphere of cordiality and friendship.

The German visitors are currently in Beijing as guests of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs.
