More Container Berths to be Built in China

Shenzhen, a south China booming city neighboring Hong Kong, will build five new container berths in its western part in cooperation with a Hong Kong company.

Shenzhen, a south China booming city neighboring Hong Kong, will build five new container berths in its western part in cooperation with a Hong Kong company.

According to a feasibility research report regarding the first phase construction of a container wharf at Dachan Bay of Shenzhen Port, three of the berths will be able to handle ships carrying 8,000 TEUs (twenty-feet equivalent unit) of containers and two other berths will be capable of accommodating ships carrying 6,000 TEUs of containers.

The construction will take about seven years to finish and is estimated to cost about 7 billion yuan (about 843 million US dollars), said the report.

A group of specialists from relevant government organizations, including the Chinese Ministry of Communications, have been organized to study the report, said local sources.

The local sources added that they would prepare a formal document based on suggestions from the specialists about the construction of the berths and submit it for approval by the StateCouncil.

A local official said the construction might break ground this year if everything goes smoothly.
