Bank Accountant Convicted of Embezzlement Put to Death

With the approval of the Supreme People's Court, Chen Xin, a former accountant at a small branch of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) convicted of embezzlement, was put to death on Friday in southwestern Chongqing Municipality.

With the approval of the Supreme People's Court, Chen Xin, a former accountant at a small branch of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) convicted of embezzlement, was put to death on Friday in southwestern Chongqing Municipality.

Chen, who worked at the Yangjiaping branch of the ICBC in the Jiulongpo District of Chongqing, was charged with having embezzled 40 million yuan (4.84 million US dollars) in public funds and with having misappropriated 3.68 million yuan (more than 440,000 US dollars) in bank deposits since 1995.

When his crime was discovered, he fled with more than six million yuan in January 2001.

He was arrested in Chengdu, the capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, on March 10, 2001.
