Vice Premier Hui Liangyu on Tuesday urged local government officials to help protect the agricultural base and farmers in the spring ploughing period in drought-stricken areas.

In an earlier written instruction, Premier Wen Jiabao also called on local governments to make a priority of spring ploughing,a vital task for millions of Chinese farmers each year.

Hui made the call as he presided a work meeting, which was attended by top officials from drought-plagued provinces, including Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong, Jilin, Henan, Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu.

Hui said crop yields could be affected, considering anti-drought efforts were likely to be hindered in parts of the countryas a result of persistent drought and falling river levels which led to lower reservoirs.

Hui stressed that the anti-drought work requires timely financial, material and technical aid for farmers, and water saving and rationing should be strictly carried out.

The work meeting was convened following an inspection tour by Hui in the eastern province of Shandong on March 22 and 23.
