China set up a research center here Saturday for statistical study of the country's national economic development, in a step to push its statistical methods closer to international standards.
Jointly sponsored by the National Bureau of Statistics and Beijing University, the center will also carry out international cooperation on specific fields as commissioned by governmental departments or organizations at home or aboard.
"Though China adopted the statistical system used by most countries with a market economy in the early 1980s, and though themain framework of China's system has become quite internationalized after two decades of evolution, it is still not very satisfactory," said Zhu Zhixin, director of the National Bureau of Statistics, at the center's opening ceremony.
Zhu, also head of the center, said he hoped the research work could help improve China's statistical methods to meet the demandsof policy makers on macro-economic control, the demands from the public to know China's economic situation and the demands for international communication and comparison.
Liu Wei, deputy head of the center, said the target of the center is to make statistics on the national economy more accurateand close to reality.
According to Liu, the major work of the center includes research on China's macro-economic development and growth and study of economic statistical methods.
The center will deliver annual reports on China's macro-economybased on the research results and sponsor regular international seminars, Liu said.
