The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) has developed a mobile automatic weather station unit for the Hong Kong Police Force to help them estimate dispersion of harmful substances, according to Hong Kong media on Saturday.
Lam Chiu-ying, director of HKO, told the press that the device will help frontline staff on incident site to estimate the dispersion of harmful substances and determine the appropriate action.
The mobile automatic weather station, which cost about 100,000 HK dollars (12,800 US dollars), was handed to the Hong Kong Policelast week after the one-year study by HKO.
So far, there is only one mobile automatic weather station in Hong Kong. The device can be used to find out the leak of harmful substances, such as toxic gas, in the public places.
As to the worry about the possible threat of the biochemical substances produced in the Iraq war, Lam said that as Hong Kong isfar away from the battlefield, Hong Kong would have little chance of being affected by toxic substances produced in the war.
Moreover, HKO has comprehensive monitor system, which receives radiation data in the air every minute, and the public need not worry about the war-related radiation, Lam added.
