US Central Command chief General Tommy Franks arrived in Kuwait early Monday to meet with his generals before a possible war on Iraq, the US-British Coalition Information Center told Xinhua.

The commander, who would lead a US invasion of Iraq, is expected to have a get-together with Kuwaiti officials and US troops based in Camp Doha, 35 km north of Kuwait, the information center said.

Franks has been touring Gulf states as Washington moves closer to an end to diplomacy on the Iraqi crisis.

At least 180,000 US and British troops are being deployed in Kuwait, which is favored by the United States as a launch pad for war against Iraq.

Speculation goes among diplomats that the war could commence within hours.
