A 27-year-old chemical doctor was convicted early this year of aiding drug manufacturing and sentenced to eight years in jail and a fine of 20,000 yuan (2,400 US dollars), a local court said.

Huang Xiaoting, a student at Shanghai's institute of organic chemistry attached to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was found guilty of offering technical support to three drug makers in manufacturing free alkali (major substance involved in making ketamine, a kind of narcotic), amphetamines and cocaine between October 2001 and June 2002.

The chemist was paid a total of 42,000 yuan (5060 US dollars) for his offer of documents which made drug production possible, according to the People's Court of Jiaojiang District of Taizhou, a city in east China's Zhejiang Province neighboring Shanghai.

With the help of Huang, Wang Jingzhu, who linked and collaborated with Lin Shaoqing and Wang Hebing, successfully produced hundreds of kilograms of drugs.

Wang Jingzhu asked for Huang's help after being introduced by aprofessor surnamed Jiang from a university in Hunan Province, central China. Wang was sentenced to a 10-year prison term and fined 110,000 yuan (13,000 US dollars). His earnings from the illegal business of 920,000 yuan (111,000 US dollars) were confiscated, the court said.

Lin and Wang Hebing were to be prosecuted in separate cases, the court said, but it did not specify how it would deal with Jiang.
