Chinese wrestlers should take part in more competitions to improve their skills, a top official from the Asian Wrestling Confederation (AWC) said in Beijing on Wednesday.

Kim Ik-jong, president of AWC Officiating Commission, said Chinese wrestlers have a long way to go as wrestling is still an unpopular sport in the country.

"China has to make overall improvements in aspects of coaches, referees and players. I think the skeleton key to this is to participate in more competitions," said Kim.

"Take South Korea for instance, about 10 years ago South Korea began to take part in training camps in Japan twice or three times a year. Each training camp lasted two or three months, during which South Korean and Japanese wrestlers communicate in power, technique and mentality.

"Besides, the South Korean national wrestling team go in for 15or 20 international tournaments per year," Kim added.

China will host three major wrestling events - 2005 Asian Wrestling Championships, 2006 Junior World Wrestling Championships and 2007 World Wrestling Championships.

Kim said the three events will not only provide a good opportunity for coaches, referees and athletes from various countries and regions to communicate but also make China well prepared for the 2008 Olympic wrestling competitions.
