S. China Port City Launches New Shipping Channel

A new navigation channel which handles 100,000-ton vessels has been launched at Zhanjiang, a portcity in South China's Guangdong province.

A new navigation channel which handles 100,000-ton vessels has been launched at Zhanjiang, a portcity in South China's Guangdong province.

The port is a major gateway for imports and exports in the vast regions of south China, and considered the shortest route to countries in Southeast Asia, Africa and Europe, according to Liang Jianwei, director of the Zhanjiang Port.

It took two years to complete the channel which is 14.6 meters deep and 170 meters wide. The project had been checked and approved by an appraisal committee from the State Ministry of Communications, Liang said.

The channel had handled a total of 300 vessels above the 60,000-ton class during trials after the first phase of the project was completed in October 2001, he said.

Expansion projects at the port involving channel construction and petroleum and ore wharves had drawn huge investment from the country's oil giants with contracts and planned investment totaling 7.45 billion yuan (898 million US dollars), the director said.

The new channel was expected to be enlarged to handle 250,000-ton vessels in the near future, the director indicated.
